Recapping Indiana's Transfer Portal Winter Period

Now that IU's spring semester has begun, let's recap the winter transfer period, position-by-position.

The Indiana University spring semester began Monday, and the reason that is significant to the college football calendar is because transfers who are not enrolled by now will find it difficult to get onto campus for Spring Camp. If you read a recent BSB, then you know that a Contact Period – when coaches and transfers/recruits can make two-way visits – began Jan. 6, and we’ve already seen new QBs coach Chandler Whitmer visiting with the No. 21 QB in the Class of 2026 down in Georgia.

This is all to say that if you imagine a needle bouncing between two poles (transfer portal and high school recruiting), then that needle is inching in the direction of high school recruiting as you read this.

However, there is a lot of gray area when considering enrollment, so the possibility of transfers signing with Indiana after today is not zero either (see recent NC State safety transfer Devan Boykin). And Indiana absolutely still has areas to address. It just means there shouldn’t be a ton of movement in the near future, which makes it safe to reflect upon the Transfer Portal Winter Period.

As of today (Jan. 15), Indiana’s 2025 transfer portal class ranks 17th nationally, according to 247Sports, and the Hoosiers have added 19 transfers (13th). That 19 number is certainly high, as the top 25 ranked teams average 16 this offseason, but it’s far more stable than in recent years, as Indiana ranked inside the top 10 in total incoming transfers each of the last three offseasons and are among the programs to lose the most players to the portal since transfer limits were removed in 2021.

Curt Cignetti has said multiple times that he wants to build from the high school level, and he will. But to field successful teams until then, the portal must be a priority. Even with that, the staff seems to be pulling the program out of the portal vortex it was spinning within before 2024 and offered some stability.
