Week 10 Gameday Roundup: Michigan State
Quick summary statistics for Indiana's 47-10 victory against Michigan State
What Indiana fans might remember the most from this game at Michigan State (besides a 47-10 blowout in retrospect) is how Michigan State was the first team to punch the Hoosiers in the mouth, forcing Indiana to trail for the first time this season. This caused a lot of anxiety among fans throughout the first quarter, particularly once the score moved to 10-0. But what was then displayed is what separates this Indiana team from previous successful Indiana teams — the staff’s competence (no…excellence) in live adversarial scheming.
The Spartans, an inconsistent team throughout the season, were overachieving with a 46-yard field goal, a fantastic TD catch by MSU WR Nick Marsh (an absolute dude), and a solid couple drives of offensive scheme, but none of it could hold up long-term in the faces of Mike Shanahan, Bryant Haines, Tino Sunseri, and others. Night turned to day by the will of the staff in a way Indiana fans either have never seen or haven’t seen in a long time — definitely hadn’t seen for the past three seasons. There were 24 total drives in this game, and after the first four (two on offense, two on defense resulting in a 10-0 deficit), Indiana had MSU clocked. They scored on seven of their next 10 offensive drives (the last an 11-play drive to end the game), and they allowed just 81 yards on MSU’s following 10 drives (8.1 yards per drive).
That continued adjustment throughout games is my personal takeaway from this game. A staff that works like that will win a lot of games, including this one.
