Data bites touching on: Indiana's recruiting momentum, Fernando Mendoza's value metrics compared to other FBS QBs, and Indiana's WRs against man-to-man coverage.
Thanks so much for the insight on recruiting. It's not something I have followed much because, quite frankly, it's overwhelming and maddening to sort through the noise. I like IU's high-level trend lines and hope they can sustain it against the Power 4 royalty.
Following recruiting in depth is essentially a full-time job for fans, and if it hadn't been my full-time job to report on it for several years, I wouldn't be able to offer this analysis because it takes a long time entrenched in coaches, sources, and prospects to really understand it. It's fascinating, but it's not super accessible.
Simply on foggy memory alone, when faced with physical man coverage vs OSU, ND and Michigan the results were mixed at best. There was initial success vs Michigan but Sarratt had two clutch drops in the second half that would have extended the lead but instead put IU in jeopardy. I have high hopes for this crew. However we still need to see it when it matters. Personally I want the guy who can get you 6 yards on 3rd and 5 in Columbus, Happy Valley and Ann Arbor more than a guy who scores when the game is decided
The nugget at the end about the WRs is something I just can't get elsewhere. I knew that Cooper was top 5 in yards/catch and that Sarratt was top 20 in that same stat, but I didn't know how good they both were in facing man-to-man coverage.
Awesome stuff….again! Love it! Thanks for the insights! All very interesting.
